Push

"I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.”
(John 1:31 ESV)

John the Baptist did not recognize his own cousin as the Christ - until He was revealed by the Holy Spirit. The sinless Christ was an anonymous carpenter from a hick town - until He returned from the wilderness temptations "in the power of the Holy Spirit" and began teaching in the synagogues, boldly announcing His ministry, declaring that He was the one of whom Isaiah spoke, saying:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.”
(Luke 4:18-19 ESV)

If our Lord Himself had no ministry prior to the empowering of the Holy Spirit, and if He had no open door to tell the Good News of Himself and His coming kingdom until He boldly stood up and publicly proclaimed it, why do we as Believers fall into the trap of evangelistic laziness, thinking that it is acceptable for us to avoid the hard work of seeking the continual infilling of the Holy Spirit and the hard work of pushing the envelope in our quest for souls?

"Holy Father God, fill me today with the sweetness of Christ, with the power of Your Holy Spirit. Pour gasoline on the flame you have already ignited in my heart. Cause my heart to explode with love for You and for my fellow man. Forgive my indifference. Destroy my penchant for self comfort. Crush my pride. Murder my selfishness. Conform me to the image of Your Perfect Son. Open doors for the Good News - even if that means that they have to be kicked in sometimes. Let me speak Your Truth into the life of an unbeliever today - and then rescue that sinner, Lord. Do this today, Father - because of the sacrifice of Your Son, through the power of the Holy Spirit, for the glory and honor of Your Great Name. Amen

To Speak Declaratively - Ya know?

This guy nailed me. I can't believe I've been sucked into talking like a 13 yr old girl from California, hanging out with the rest of her peeps at the mall. Before you judge that statement, watch this clip. If you're under 40, I betcha hear yourself. Unless you're so immune to it that you don't hear it at all.

As Christ Loved...

Just came home from a beautiful, Christ-honoring wedding. The pastor's exhortation and the groom's vows reminded me again of just how impossible this thing is, this loving our wives as Christ loved the church. It was a strange mixture of gratitude and guilt that filtered through my soul as I sat there. Gratitude for almost 20 years of marriage - a marriage that gets better and better - and guilt for how often my sinful selfishness and pride does it harm. Lately, I've been reading Randy Alcorn's book "Heaven". On page 121, he says "We will be revealed at our resurrection, when our adoption will be finalized and our bodies redeemed. We will be fully human, with righteous spirits and incorruptible bodies." To which I say, "Bring it on!".

Church of England

This is very funny and very sad - both because of it's truthfulness.
